Walter Raymond Hibbs, 88, of Cumberland, Wisconsin, died on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Care and Rehab, Cumberland. He was born April 13, 1938, in Indian Creek, Wisconsin, to Raymond and Irene (Spores) Hibbs. Walt attended grade school at Indian Creek before moving and attended McKinley School. He then graduated from Luck High School in 1956.
Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1959. In 1961, he was called back into service during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was honorably discharged again in 1962. Walt would go on to marry Elaine Hohweiler, on September 26, 1964.
Walt worked in road construction both before and after his time in the service. He also worked for Talbot Construction before moving to 3M. In 1973, Walt was finally able to pursue his dream of being a dairy farmer; which he did until 2000 when he retired.
He loved life on the farm, spending time with the cows and calves. He also enjoyed ice fishing, and hunting ducks, partridge, and deer.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; son, Raymond “Razor” Hibbs; sister, Sally Didde; sister-in-law, Debra (George) Anderson; brother-in-law, Dick Diesterhaft; many nieces and nephews; and fur buddy, Walker. Walt was preceded in death by his parents; step-fathers, Clarence Nystrom and Chet Sokolowski; brother, Gordon Hibbs; sister-in-law, Sandra Hibbs; brothers-in-law, Thomas Hohweiler and Arthur Didde; and sisters-in-law, Kathie Hohweiler and Terrie Hohweiler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 24, 2026, at Skinner Funeral Home, Cumberland. Burial will be in McKinley Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland and one hour before the service. Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is serving the family.
