BALSAM LAKE – With four scheduled performances, the Unity School drama department was busy learning lines, dialing in the lights, perfecting their dance steps and scheduling in last-minute costume fittings for their performances of “The Little Mermaid.” The cast and crew performed for the public March 2, 5, 10 and 12.
With many brave solo performances and group song numbers with individuals showcasing their tap-dancing skills, the crowd enjoyed the high school performance. Attendees were excited to hear that the play even had their own pit orchestra, consisting of Meredith Sorel, Alex Bates, Karlie Hansen and Crystal Sonsalla, band and choir teachers at the Unity School District, who played their own instruments to contribute to the performance.
Many of the students who participated in the production were in multiple extracurricular activities. State qualifiers in Science Olympiad and FBLA were in the cast, along with three athletes from the boys basketball team who held lead roles. Jaclyn Ahlgren, director of the musical commented, “I am in awe of the work ethic. I can’t believe how talented they are on multiple levels, yet they show up to rehearsals ready to work hard. I am so grateful my colleagues and I can share in an enthusiasm to allow them to showcase multiple strengths. What a great time to be a Unity Eagle.”
Patti Woltz, attendee to the March 5 performance, had four family members in the performance and added, “I think this play is awesome, yes, it’s really good, and they all played their parts really well.”
