SHELL LAKE – A pair of relay wins boosted the Grantsburg boys track and field team to an overall win in the Shell Lake Invitational on April 18 while Derek Thiex gave Siren a pair of wins in field events.
The Pirates won three events in total and had runner-up finishes in three more events to end with 138 points, ahead of Shell Lake, 109.5, and Cornell-Lake Holcombe, 88.5; Siren was ninth with 30.5 points, getting wins from Thiex in the discus and shot put.
Silas Prusinski, Aaron Burkman, Ian Burkman and Jordan Gaffney won the 400 relay in 46.32 seconds for Grantsburg and the 3200-relay team of Aden Erickson, Matt Michaels, Joseph Quintana and Connor Quimby won in 9:11.6. Quimby also won the 3200 in 10:24.33.
The Pirates got runner-up finishes in the 800 relay with Dominik Spohn, Ian Burkman, Chase Green and Gaffney in 1:36.51; from Spohn in the 100 hurdles at 18.96 and Aaron Burkman in the pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches.
Grantsburg’s overall win also was aided by third-place finishes in six events – Prusinski, 23.8, in the 200; Josh Hartke, 2:15.26, in the 800; Green, 16-5, in the long jump; Zach Carlson in the discus, 92-1, and the shot put, 37-8; along with the 1600-relay team of Avery Brown, Carson Lee, Hartke and Green, 3:57.4.
Thiex led Siren with wins in the shot put and the discus. He won the shot put with a mark of 44-9 and the discus at 125-4, which was 27 feet ahead of the runner-up.
