Sorensen and Driscoll have event wins for Blue Devils - College Roundup

EAU CLAIRE – Two area athletes earned wins for the University of Wisconsin-Stout women’s track and field team in Friday’s Dick & Mary Johnson Invitational at UW-Eau Claire.

Raegan Sorensen, Unity, and Jenna Driscoll, St. Croix Falls, had event wins for the Blue Devils, as they prepared for the upcoming WIAC Championship at UW-Whitewater this weekend.

Sorensen won the pole vault at 12 feet, 2 inches while Driscoll won the long jump at 17-11.75. And both had additional top-five finishes in other events.

Sorensen added a third-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 127-0 and Driscoll joined teammates Kaylie Rahts, Ava DeBaker and Caitlin Harrison to finish the 400 relay in third with a time of 49.2.

The WIAC Championship is scheduled to start Friday afternoon and conclude on Saturday.

Baseball

  • Nick Paulsen, Unity, improved his season record to 5-0 for UW-Stevens Point in an 8-3 win over UW-Eau Claire on Monday.

Paulsen pitched six innings with nine strikeouts while allowing three hits and one earned run.

It was the 10th consecutive win for the Pointers, who host UW-Oshkosh for two games this weekend to conclude the regular season.

  • Levi Jensen, Luck, and North Alabama had their losing streak extended to eight games with a three-game sweep by Jacksonville State over the weekend.

The Lions were close to a win on April 25, but took an 8-7 loss to Murray State. Jensen had a hit and run scored for North Alabama.

Jensen also had a hit in both the 9-6 loss to Jacksonville State on Friday and the 8-1 loss on Saturday. Jacksonville State completed the sweep with a 13-3 win on Sunday.

The Lions host North Florida for three games this weekend.

  • Hunter Rosenbaum, Webster, and North Dakota State enter today’s game against Nebraska with a four-game win streak.

After a 10-3 win over Minnesota on April 25, the Bison swept Western Illinois in a three-game series over the weekend. They earned a 10-0 win on Friday, a 13-3 win on Saturday and a 21-3 win on Sunday.

The Bison go to Northern Colorado for three games this weekend.

  • Jared Lessman, St. Croix Falls, and Iowa Western are on a four-game win streak going into a doubleheader against Des Moines Area Community College today.

The Reivers lost a 2-1 decision to Southwestern Community College in the first game of a doubleheader on April 26. Lessman pitched five innings and struck out seven in the loss.

But they recovered for a 10-7 win in the second game followed with a three-game sweep of Indian Hills Community College over the weekend. The Reivers won 10-1 on Friday, 5-2 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday.

Iowa Western completes its regular season with a three-game series at Northeast Community College this weekend.

Softball

  • Savanna Trittelwitz, Grantsburg, and UW-River Falls will try to break an eight-game skid today in a doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire.

The Falcons were swept in a doubleheader by UW-Stevens Point, 11-6 and 8-1, on April 26, which pushed the losing streak to six games. Trittelwitz pitched one inning in the 8-1 loss, striking out one and allowing two hits.

On Saturday they were swept again, this time by UW-Oshkosh, 10-0 and 5-1.

UW-River Falls hosts UW-Whitewater for a doubleheader tomorrow to conclude the regular season.

Men’s track & field

  • Layton Borst, St. Croix Falls, helped St. Olaf to a third-place finish in the Rider-Bolstorff Invitational on Saturday. St. Olaf finished with 97 points, behind only Bethel, 128, and Macalester, 116.

Borst was fourth on the pole vault at 12 feet, 15.5 inches.

  • Chase Doornink, Grantsburg, and UW-La Crosse’s 1600-relay team earned a third-place finish in last week’s Drake Relays.

Doornink joined teammates Caden Pearce, Payton Flood and Addison Hill to finish in 3:12.33 in Saturday’s finale to the three-day event.
