Seniors play for free; Questions arise over who makes community center decisions

TOWN OF LAKETOWN – On Tuesday, Dec. 27, the Laketown board met at the Cushing Community Center for their monthly board meeting. One item on the agenda that had raised some community concerns was the charging of seniors to play cards at the community center, one time a week.

The Cushing Community Center is a unique situation, in that it is owned by two towns, the towns of Sterling and Laketown. At the November 2022 monthly meeting of the town of Sterling, the board had voted to charge the seniors $25 per visit to use the community center for their weekly card games.

It has since been brought to the attention of both towns that the Cushing Community Center has a board of its own, and in fact, they are the ones that make the decisions about pricing and charging. The board consists of a board representative from each town, a road crew member from each town, and community representatives from each town. If there are community members from either Laketown or Sterling who would be interested in helping with the community center, they are encouraged to reach out to the Cushing Community Center board.

At the last community center board meeting, it was decided that the seniors will not be charged to play cards at the center.
