GRANTSBURG - On Saturday, Feb. 11, a fundraiser for the Grantsburg Community Pool was had at Joker’s Bar and Fun Alley.
In previous years the village of Grantsburg covered deficits. When it was announced that operating costs for the pool would be cut from the village budget due to a deficit this year, the current pool manager, Julie Fiedler, asked permission to fundraise to keep it open. During the school year, Fiedler is a teacher with Grantsburg Schools, but during June to late August, she helps manage the pool. Fiedler also mentioned that while funding had been cut for this year, it might be possible that the village would consider funding for the pool in the future on a year-to-year basis.
Typically, the operation costs for the pool can fluctuate depending on its maintenance needs. The pool provides swimming lessons for 270 kids in the summertime. Any child in the Grantsburg School District can receive swimming lessons that are funded by the schools, which serves as a major resource to the area.
The goal of this fundraiser was to begin fundraising enough for this year’s operations and work toward some extra funding for upcoming years or potential maintenance needs, should an expensive piece of equipment need attention. The fundraiser on Feb. 11 was only one of several Fiedler had planned. It featured a dinner, silent auction, 50/50 raffles and live music.
