Richard Sherman Alger of Mesquite, Nevada, passed away Feb. 18, 2026. He was born Oct. 30, 1936, to Sherman and Grace Alger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Nancy Alger; brother, Charles Alger; daughter, Kathy Niles; and grandson, Marty Jay Niles.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Alger; brother, Art Alger; children, Roberta (Kyle) Miller, Paul (Sheila) Alger, Harmony (Bryce) Wittmayer, and Nate (Katie) Panek; thirteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Richard attended Thorp High School, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Garret Theological Seminary, and Illiff School of Theology.
He served the United Methodist Churches from 1957 to 1990. While serving the United Methodist Church in Frederic, Wisconsin, he became a volunteer certified EMT. Starting in 1992, he served many congregational churches on the Big Island of Hawaii. He retired in 2004 from Lanakila Hawaiian UCC. Richard continued to be an active member in multiple churches by playing his cornet and ukulele, singing in the choir, performing weddings and baptisms, and preaching.
Richard’s hobbies included carpentry, being an all-around “fix it guy” (always looking for a project), and loving his grandkids. Richard’s family appreciates the support and love that they have been given during this difficult time. Mahalo Nui Loa.
