ST. CROIX FALLS – The St. Croix Falls girls basketball team stretched its win streak to five games with three victories last week.
The Saints earned victories over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, Prescott and Spooner to give them wins in 13 of their past 14 games.
The scoring duo of Lucy Belisle and Brianna McCurdy led the Saints to a 75-50 win over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser on Jan. 24. Belisle led all scorers with 25 points and added five rebounds while McCurdy had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Thursday’s game was more of a challenge, but St. Croix Falls still finished with the 47-45 win over Prescott. Belisle again led the Saints, finishing with 18 points and five rebounds while Kelsey Cooper had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
“Tough game,” St. Croix Falls coach Angela Maternowsky said. “Our inside game with Belisle and Cooper was the factor in the game.”
The Saints had an easier time with Spooner on Friday, getting a 76-28 win on the road. Belisle led St. Croix Falls with 18 points and 10 rebounds; Selah Greenquist had 15 points and Ayla Schmidt had 12 points with 15 rebounds.
“Schmidt has done a great job on getting rebounds (and) all of our players were able to score,” Maternowsky said. “Everyone was able to get valuable minutes.”
St. Croix Falls remained undefeated in the Heart O’ North Conference with a 10-0 record, maintaining the top spot in the standings. The Saints go to Cumberland this Thursday and to Cameron on Saturday before going to Ashland on Tuesday.
Unity 50, Shell Lake 26
Sloan Horgan led the Eagles with 12 points in Friday’s road win.
Lola McElhone added 10 points for Unity while Sydney Smith and Maddi Reed had seven points each. Smith led the team with nine rebounds and Reed had five rebounds with five steals.
Grantsburg 72, Luck 23
The Pirates outscored Luck 45-13 in the first half of their road win on Friday.
Madison Schafer had a game-high 24 points for the Pirates, who opened the game with an 18-1 run. They also closed the half with a 17-6 run to take the 32-point lead into the break.
Whitney Myers had 11 points for Grantsburg and Ruby Rengo added 10.
Stella Johansen led Luck with seven points; Kally Svoboda had four points.
Webster 35, Luck 29
With a 28-28 tie late in the second half, the Tigers outscored the Cardinals 7-1 down the stretch to claim a road win on Thursday.
Lauren Hetfeld had a game-high 12 points and added 11 rebounds for Webster, which led by as many as nine in the first half but eventually took a six-point lead into the break.
The Tigers once again were up by nine points in the second half before a 7-0 run brought the Cardinals within a basket. A 6-0 run by Luck tied the game later at 28-28, but back-to-back baskets from Hetfeld gave Webster the lead for good.
Brooke Wolf had eight points for the Tigers; Olivia Walters led the Cardinals with nine points and Sophie Eder had seven.
Unity 39, Siren 37
Maddi Reed scored a game-high 16 points and had 11 rebounds for the Eagles in their road win on Jan. 24.
Unity held a 20-12 lead entering halftime and withstood a second-half comeback effort by the Dragons.
Lola McElhone had 10 points and five rebounds for the Eagles.
Emma Peterson had 13 points and five steals for Siren; Lindsay Liljenberg had 11 points.
Grantsburg 61, Webster 35
The Pirates scoring depth allowed them to overcome the scoring of Lauren Hetfeld in a road win on Jan. 24.
Hetfeld led all scorers with 23 points for Webster, but no other player on the team had more than one basket. Meanwhile, Megan Schafer led Grantsburg with 17 points and seven steals with Madison Schafer adding 13 points and Whitney Myers scoring nine.
Hetfeld also had six rebounds and five steals for the Tigers.
Unity 44, Cameron 41 (OT)
Lola McElhone led the Eagles with 16 points and six rebounds in their win on Jan. 23.
Maddi Reed had eight points and seven rebounds for Unity; Mahkenna Smisek had seven points.
