Mildred “Millie” Lundquist, 91, of Frederic, passed away on July 7, 2023, surrounded by her family.

Millie was born on March 2, 1932, to Niels and Ellen Nielsen in the Danish community on County Road N west of Luck, the seventh of eight children. Millie graduated from Milltown High School in 1950. She met Wayne Lundquist at a dance hall, and they were married on Aug. 12, 1951. They both loved dancing and it continued to be something they enjoyed throughout their 63 years of marriage.

Millie and Wayne settled in the West Sweden area and ran a dairy farm, where they raised their children, Bruce, Bryan and Junellyn. Millie worked on the farm and at the Frederic Hospital for a number of years in the business office.

Millie was known for her love of cooking for her family and friends. She was especially known for her homemade buns and potato salad. Millie enjoyed gardening and canning; she oversaw the canning of the maple syrup from the Lundquist 100-year-old maple grove for many years. She was also known for the many baby blankets she sewed for friends and relatives.

Millie was a dedicated church member at Grace Lutheran Church in West Sweden. She taught Sunday school, served on the cemetery board, was an active WELCA member and enjoyed the Thursday Brown Bag Bible Study for many years.

Millie and Wayne became grandparents to nine grandkids. Millie took an active role in babysitting and was a wonderful grandma. Millie and Wayne were very supportive of all the grandkids’ sporting events and school concerts. This tradition carried on as Millie became a great-grandparent as well.

Millie and Wayne enjoyed traveling, so they purchased a camper that took them to many polka fests, camping spots, and south to Arizona for the winters. In the summers they invited the grandkids to make camping memories with them. Millie and Wayne also traveled to Sweden and Denmark in 1985 to visit relatives in both countries, and those relatives returned the visit to America and enjoyed Millie and Wayne’s hospitality here.

Millie moved off the home farm in 2020. She was especially pleased that one of her granddaughters would be living in her home. Millie adjusted to apartment living very well and enjoyed visiting with the apartment residents.

Millie turned 91 in March, and health problems became a concern. Throughout all the months when she was dealing with various health problems, she remained cheerful and positive.

Millie was the best mom, the best mom-in-law, grandma and great-grandma that anyone could have. We were truly blessed!

Preceding Millie in death were her husband, Wayne; her siblings, Eleanore, Violet, Alvin, Norman, Elmer, Helen and Fuddy; nephew, Duane; niece, Julie; plus all her sisters- and brothers-in-law.

Those left to celebrate her life are Bruce and Sandy, Bryan and Lori, and Junellyn and Cliff; grandchildren, Amy (Jeremy), Beth (Bryan), Cassie (Travis), Nick (Andrea), Tim (Anita), Greg (Kelly), Jenny (Aaron), Kristen (Sam) and Megan (Mike); great-grandchildren, Andrew, Ben, Calvin, Ruby, Mallory, Owen, Roz, Clara, Eddie, Zack, Willa, Hadley, Knox, Chole, Jack, Sam, Zoe, Langston, Ellie and little Millie; plus many nieces and nephews.
