NORTHERN WISCONSIN – The Raptor Education Group, headquartered in Antigo, issued a warning on Thursday, April 20, for something called a “loon fallout.” If you never heard of it, you’re not alone. But with the extreme temperature swings we have seen over the last two weeks or so, it appears to happening.
A “loon fallout” occurs when atmospheric conditions are such that the migrating loons develop ice on their body as they fly at high altitude and crash-land when they are no longer able to fly due to the weight of the ice on their body or the interference with their flight ability. The current and unstable air currents is a perfect setup for this phenomenon to occur.
According to the Raptor Education Group, reports have come in to our region from as close by as Rice Lake in Barron County.
Loons can be difficult to handle, so if you notice any injured birds, or birds who are unable to fly, it’s advised that you call REG at 715-623-4015, or Loon Rescue at 715-966-5415.
Loons are the symbol of the North Woods but need our help until the weather patterns begin to change a bit.
