Frederic ice rink will be closed for the season

FREDERIC - The Frederic Village Board met Monday, Jan. 9. An update from the parks committee stated that warm and wet weather has been very good for snow sports, but poor for ice, leading to delays in getting the ice rink prepared. Due to lack of frost, the ice has been unable to stay on top of the ground for the ice rink. Unfortunately, it would be expensive to try to open the rink this year with the maintenance necessary due to the leaks and patches that would be needed, and the issues anticipated would not allow the rink to open until late February, resulting in a very short season. Luck, apparently, has also not decided if they are going to open their rink. Due to these factors, the rink in Frederic will remain closed for this season.

In the police report, yearly calls for service were at 1,521. December into January was a very busy time, and assistance was needed from village employees. Two cars were stolen. The police department also assisted the county with a house that was in the beginnings of meth cooking, and ended the year with being alerted to a truck that was eventually towed and was full of paraphernalia and drugs. Chief Tamara Larson said that due to all the major crime recently it has been good training for the new officer, Randall Selle.

There is an upcoming vote for village board seats. A caucus was scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 6:30 p.m. to determine which names go on the ballot, and villagers could vote for those candidates that day. A second day of voting for the village will be held Tuesday, April 4, to determine who will be elected to those seats. Terms will begin on Tuesday, April 18, and are two years in length.
