David Gene Tubergen, age 81, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, at the Frederic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Frederic, Wisconsin.
David, the son of Merle and Grace (Schrotenboer) Tubergen, grew up in Holland, Michigan. An early love of violin was nurtured by degrees from Hope College, Yale University, and a PhD from New York University. He spread his love of music by teaching in Holland, Michigan public schools, Eastern New Mexico University, Augsburg University, and Stillwater, Minnesota public schools. His outgoing, generous, and creative nature was expressed in enthusiasms ranging from orchid and hosta growing, to weaving, to French cooking, and bread baking. Later, in his struggles with alcoholism, he was helped by many friends in AA and in his final six years by the caring staff of the Frederic Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.
While no public services are planned, memorials to Hope College Music Department are appreciated.
