LUBBOCK, Texas – Two former Webster baseball teammates took the field for opposing teams over the weekend.
Owen Washburn and Texas Tech hosted Hunter Rosenbaum and North Dakota State for a three-game series in which the Red Raiders took two of the three decisions.
The Bison claimed the 8-1 win in Friday’s opener, holding Texas Tech scoreless for the final seven innings. Washburn had two hits in the loss, though the Red Raiders recovered for a pair of wins on Saturday.
Both Washburn and Rosenbaum played in the first game of the doubleheader. Washburn helped the Red Raiders to a 5-0 lead through five innings, hitting an RBI sacrifice fly and adding another hit as they went up 8-1 through six.
But Rosenbaum entered the game to pitch the final two innings, holding the Red Raiders scoreless while striking out two. It allowed the Bison to close the gap with four unanswered runs though they were held scoreless in the top of the ninth and Texas Tech finished with the 8-5 win.
The Red Raiders closed the series with an 8-3 win in the second game.
Texas Tech improved to 22-10 and goes to Oklahoma for a three-game set this weekend; North Dakota State dropped to 8-22 overall and goes to St. Thomas for three games this weekend.
Baseball
• Nick Paulsen, Unity, pitched his second win of the year for University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a 12-3 decision over UW-La Crosse on Saturday.
Paulsen pitched five shutout innings, allowed five hits and struck out five. The Pointers erased an early deficit by scoring eight unanswered runs over the final five innings.
UW-Stevens Point goes to St. Norbert today and hosts UW-Whitewater for a two-game series this weekend.
• Levi Jensen, Luck, and North Alabama snapped a 14-game losing streak with an 11-10 win over Samford on April 4.
Jensen had a hit and drew a walk for the Lions, who nearly had the win taken from them. They had three three-run innings and eventually took an 11-4 lead into the ninth inning, where Samford scored six runs to pull within a run.
North Alabama got the third out to preserve the win, though it was swept by Lipscomb in a three-game set later in the week. The Lions go to Bellarmine for a three-game series starting Friday.
• Jared Lessman, St. Croix Falls, and Iowa Western won three of their five games last week, improving to 25-4 overall on the season.
The Reivers swept a doubleheader, 13-0 and 10-2, at Iowa Lakes Community College and split a doubleheader at home with Southeastern Community College, taking a 6-4 loss and a 9-6 win. Lessman took the loss in the opener, going three innings and striking out four while allowing three hits with two earned runs.
Southeastern took the series with an 11-7 win on Saturday.
Iowa Western goes to Southwestern Community College for a game today and to Kirkwood Community College for a three-game series this weekend.
Men’s track & field
• Chase Doornink, Grantsburg, helped UW-La Crosse to a win in Friday’s Ashton May Invitational.
The Eagles finished with 266.5 team points while UW-Oshkosh, 132, was second and UW-Eau Claire, 115.5, was third.
Doornink finished second in the 400 at 47.89, behind only teammate Caden Pearce, 47.53. UW-La Crosse took the top four spots in the event, earning 29 team points.
• Noah Koball, Siren, had a personal-best effort in the discus for Michigan Tech in Saturday’s Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
Koball finished seventh with a mark of 148 feet, 4 inches and added a 15th-place finish in the shot put at 44-10.25.
Women’s track & field
Jenna Driscoll, St. Croix Falls, and Raegan Sorensen, Unity, had top-10 finishes for UW-Stout in the Ashton May Invitational at UW-La Crosse on Friday.
Sorensen had a runner-up finish in the javelin at 118-11 and was seventh on the pole vault at 10-10.25. Driscoll set a personal-best time of 12.61 in the 100 for an 8th-place finish. She also was part of the Blue Devils’ 400 relay team that placed third in 50.44.
