NEW YORK – Amery’s Alicia Monson ran to a national record in the Millrose Games on Saturday.

The U.S. Olympic long-distance runner and 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for University of Wisconsin-Madison, finished the women’s indoor 3,000-meter run in 8 minutes, 25.05 seconds to win the event and set an American record. She was just over a half-second better than the previous mark, set by Karissa Schweizer in 2020.

Monson broke from the field just shy of the halfway point of the race and said she began thinking about both a victory and what it would take to set the national mark.

“I was looking at the times and I kind of knew exactly what I’d have to countdown to, so I was just trying to squeeze it all and I got it by a couple of tenths,” Monson said.

This is the second time Monson has won at Millrose. In 2019, she finished the event in 8:45.97 to win it as a collegiate competitor with the third-fastest time in NCAA history at that time. She won the NCAA title in the 5,000-meter with a time of 15:31.26.

In 2021, Monson finished 13th in the 10,000-meter of the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a time of 31:21.36.
