Kathleen Kothlow, 71, of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 5, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on March 26, 1954, to John and Geraldine McQuillan. Kathy is survived by her husband, Brad Kothlow; daughters, Carrie Steiger (Matt), Stephanie Ahmedić (Igor) and Lexie Kothlow; and five grandchildren who brought her endless joy. She is also survived by her siblings, Jeannie McQuillan, Micki McQuillan (Tom), John McQuillan (Jane), Mary McQuillan (Joe), Peggy Gibbs (Mike), Angie Schaefer (Dan) and Timothy McQuillan (Renae).

Kathy’s creativity and passion for food came together throughout her life. She ran a custom cake decorating business from her home for many years, crafting one-of-a-kind cakes. Later, she turned her love of baking into a career by managing several bakeries in the Twin Cities and local area. Her confectionary creations were always a highlight at family gatherings, where her talents filled the dessert table year after year.

A woman who thrived on activity, Kathy loved working in her gardens, picking berries, exploring new places, snowmobiling, and spending time on the lake. She enjoyed curating unique collections, a hobby that reflected her eye for the unusual and her playful, creative nature. Never one to turn down a spin on the dance floor when live music was playing, Kathy relished time spent laughing and celebrating with friends and family.

In honor of a life well lived, a Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4:00 p.m., at The Balsam Lake Lodge.
