GRANTSBURG – On the evening of Monday, March 3, the Grantsburg High School auditorium was the venue for a concert featuring the high school concert band, jazz band and the concert choir. It was a chance for the students to show what they had been working on during the winter and to give a preview of the pieces they will be performing at the large group festival concert later this month in Luck.

The concert band, directed by Jesse Frozene, kicked off the evening with a march, “Allied Honor,” followed by “Loch Lomond,” a well known Scottish folk song, and then ended their performance with a Randall Standridge piece, “Impact,” which heavily featured the entire percussion section.

Next, the jazz band, also under the direction of Jesse Frozene, played two selections. Gershwin’s “Summertime”, which included solos by several students, and the jazz standard “Manteca,” co-written byDizzy Gillespie, Chano Pozo and Gil Fuller.

After the jazz band’s performance there was a brief break in the music for a drawing and promotion for the music department’s upcoming mattress sale fundraiser.

The high school concert choir finished the evening with three songs, directed by Sean Lawrence and accompanied by Kari Java on the piano. First was the choral classic “Set Me as a Seal”, then the joyous “Domine Fili Unigenite,” part of Vivald’s “Gloria”. The choir closed out the concert with “Sure on this Shining Night”, Morten Lauridsen’s beautiful take on a James Agee poem.

The next performance for the students will be on Tuesday, March 25, at the Large Group Festival Concert in Luck. The mattress sale fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 5, and is a great way to support the music department and the talented students that are a part of it.
