Betty Ruth Everson of Cushing, Wisconsin, passed away on April 27, 2025, at the United Pioneer Home in Luck, Wisconsin. She was born on Dec. 10, 1932, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Clarence and Mabel Skinner, joining sisters, Esther and Clara and later welcoming a brother, Herbert. As a child she spent most of her time outdoors, working in the garden and swimming or ice skating at Tenney Park. Her life was set on its course when a neighbor invited her to Sunday School and she placed her faith in Jesus Christ while attending Bible camp. She continued her lifelong journey of faith in the Youth for Christ organization and as an active church member.
Betty attended the Lakewood School and graduated from Wisconsin High in 1950. She participated in G. A. A. (Girls Athletic Association) and was recognized for her talents in speed skating. Her first jobs included babysitting and working at the local drug store. After high school she worked as a file clerk at American Family Insurance.
While singing in the choir at Bethany Free Church, she met Ron Everson, a tall, fun-loving guy in the bass section. They were married on May 12, 1956, and were blessed with four children, Jane, James, Jan and Jon. They were charter members of the Buckeye Evangelical Free Church, where Betty was active in Women’s Missionary Society and served as a leader in the AWANA program and Vacation Bible School. They enjoyed an active social life and participated in a couples bowling league.
In 1973, the family relocated to Cushing, near the town of Atlas, Wisconsin, where Ron had grown up. Betty made the transition from city living to farm life, helping with the chores and raising a large garden. They were initially members of the Atlas United Methodist Church and later joined the Trade Lake Baptist Church, where she was active in everything from teaching Sunday School to helping with the annual rummage sales. She also worked for a brief time as a teaching assistant at Luck Public Schools.
After her children were grown, Betty started a new career as a certified nursing assistant. She worked at the Continuing Care Center in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, for 20 years, retiring at age 72. She then devoted nearly 20 years to caring for husband Ron, who had suffered a stroke. When Ron entered the United Pioneer Home, Betty moved to Lawson Manor to be with him in his final months. After his passing in 2020, she returned home to begin her “new adventure” — living on her own for the first time at age 88.
With the support of her family, she spent four years enjoying her yard work and hosting many holidays and visits with her family, which now included eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. After a fall in her home in Oct. 2024, she moved to the United Pioneer Home. She spent her final days surrounded by her family and the loving staff, making new friends, and generally being a blessing to everyone.
Throughout her life Betty was known for her fun-loving personality, positive attitude, caring heart, and service to others. She was devoted to her church, her family, and her work, and was described by many as the most truly happy and grateful person they had ever met. Her priorities were faith, family, and fun — and she lived out those values every day of her life. Her beaming smile and outbursts of infectious laughter will be greatly missed.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ron; siblings, Esther (Tom) Krehl of Madison, Wisconsin, Clara (Al) Dickens of Lyle, Washington, and Herb Skinner of the Philippines. To cherish her memory she leaves children, Jane (Norm) Quick Hanson of St. Croix Falls, Jim (Julie) Everson of Roseville, Minnesota, Jan (friend Jeff Holdt) Everson, and Jon (Cherie) Everson, both of Luck; grandchildren, Jason (Abby) Quick, Christina (Sama) Sandy, Josiah (Britta) Quick, Eric Everson, Leah Everson, Andrei Todd, Masha (Bryan) Nelson and Isaac Todd; great-grandchildren, Amelia and Soren, Sandy, Coen, Bram, and Marlowe Quick, Ivy Quick, and baby boy Nelson (arriving Sept. 2025); and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 12, at Trade Lake Baptist Church, 20750 Co Rd Z, Frederic, Wisconsin. Service at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Graveside service at Union Cemetery and lunch will follow at the church.
