FREDERIC – Frederic Elementary School’s second- and third-graders turned the gymnasium into a Hollywood blockbuster stage on Thursday, Feb. 27, with their “Frederic Rock Movies” music concert. The student-picked theme delivered a toe-tapping, nostalgia-packed evening inspired by classic films like “The Breakfast Club,” “Ghostbusters,” “The Lion King” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Directed by music teacher Lisa Mattson, who traded her usual attire for a Queen Elsa costume from “Frozen,” the event blended music and movement with flair. The students presented xylophone solos, all-class bucket drumming, solo singing, choreography and skits.

The program leaned into iconic movie tunes, kicking off with the ominous “Jaws” theme song by John Williams and rolling through hits like “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins, “Circle of Life” by Elton John, and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, with Anna Gindt stepping into the ring as boxer Rocky Balboa. Xylophone players Meiah Barnett, Aylo Kamofsky, Hali McNielly and Abrielle Guzman added sparkle to “Hedwig’s Theme,” while the bucket-drumming provided a rendition of “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Hans Zimmer.

Mattson, who also compiled the story linking the performances, credited the Frederic Elementary staff for their behind-the-scenes help, from chair setup to costume wrangling. “This couldn’t have happened without them,” she said in the program notes, thanking the team for juggling schedules and stage duties.
